A flat tyre at home, a warning light on the way to work, or a failed MOT can leave you staring at a string of letters and numbers on the rubber. They are not random. Tyre sidewall numbers explained simply: they tell a technician the tyre’s size, construction, carrying capacity and safe speed capability. Reading them correctly helps ensure the replacement fitted to your car or van is suitable, safe and legal.
The key point is this: do not choose a tyre by wheel diameter alone. Two tyres can both fit a 17-inch wheel but have different widths, sidewall heights, load ratings and speed ratings. Those differences affect handling, braking, comfort and whether the tyre is approved for your vehicle.
Tyre sidewall numbers explained with a real example
Most passenger-car tyres display a code similar to this:
225/45 R17 94W
This is the information a tyre technician will use when sourcing the right replacement. Each part matters.
225 – tyre width in millimetres
The first number is the tyre’s nominal width from sidewall to sidewall. In this example, the tyre is 225mm wide.
A wider tyre can offer a larger contact patch in some conditions, but it is not automatically a better choice. It may change steering feel, increase road noise or affect clearance inside the wheel arch. Fit the size specified by the vehicle manufacturer unless an approved alternative has been confirmed.
45 – the profile, or sidewall height
The number after the slash is the aspect ratio. It shows the sidewall height as a percentage of the tyre width, not a measurement in millimetres. A 225/45 tyre has a sidewall height of 45% of 225mm.
Lower-profile tyres, such as 35 or 40 profiles, usually have shorter, stiffer sidewalls. They can give a sharper response through bends but are less forgiving over potholes and kerbs. A higher-profile tyre generally gives more cushioning, which can be useful on everyday roads, but it will only be correct if it matches the vehicle’s approved specification.
R – radial construction
The R means radial. Nearly every modern car and van tyre uses radial construction, where the internal cords run across the tyre from bead to bead. It is a normal marking, rather than a performance grade.
You may occasionally see other construction letters on specialist or older tyres. For most drivers, the practical job is to make sure the complete size code matches the tyre currently fitted or the size shown on the vehicle’s tyre-information label and handbook.
17 – wheel diameter in inches
This number tells you the diameter of the wheel rim the tyre is designed for. A tyre marked R17 fits a 17-inch rim. It cannot safely be fitted to an 18-inch or 16-inch wheel, even if the tyre appears close in size.
Wheel size is only one part of the decision. A 17-inch tyre still needs the correct width, profile, load index and speed rating to work as intended.
94 – load index
The load index is a coded number that states the maximum weight the tyre can carry at its specified pressure. In this example, 94 represents a maximum load of 670kg per tyre.
That does not mean you should add up four tyre ratings and load the vehicle to that figure. Vehicle weight distribution, axle limits, inflation pressure and towing all matter. The important rule is to fit tyres with at least the manufacturer’s required load index. Do not downgrade it to save money.
This is particularly relevant for vans, people carriers and cars used with full passenger loads, tools, stock or towing equipment. A tyre that looks right but has an insufficient load rating is not the right tyre.
W – speed rating
The final letter is the speed rating. W means the tyre is rated for speeds up to 168mph under controlled test conditions. It is not permission to drive at that speed, and UK road limits always apply.
Common ratings include T, H, V, W and Y. The correct rating is set by the vehicle manufacturer and relates to heat resistance and handling as well as maximum speed. In many cases you should fit the original rating or higher. Winter tyres can sometimes be fitted with a lower speed rating where permitted, provided the driver is clearly reminded of the tyre’s limit.
Other tyre sidewall markings worth checking
The large size code is the one most people need, but other markings help identify the tyre’s construction, age and intended use.
XL or Extra Load means the tyre has a reinforced construction designed to carry more weight at a higher pressure. It is common on heavier vehicles and performance cars. If your vehicle was supplied with XL tyres, replacing them with standard-load versions may not be suitable, even when the basic size looks identical.
Run-flat markings vary by manufacturer, but may include RFT, ROF, SSR or ZP. Run-flat tyres have strengthened sidewalls that can support the vehicle for a limited distance after a loss of pressure. They should only be fitted where the vehicle and wheel system are designed for them, usually with a tyre-pressure monitoring system. They also have specific repair considerations.
M+S means mud and snow, while the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol identifies a tyre that has met a recognised snow-performance test. These markings are particularly useful when choosing all-season or winter tyres, but they do not replace sensible driving in ice, standing water or severe weather.
Tubeless confirms the tyre is designed to run without an inner tube. This is standard on modern road vehicles. You may also see an E-mark, showing the tyre meets relevant European approval requirements.
How to find the right tyre size for your vehicle
The sidewall on the tyre already fitted is a useful starting point, especially when all four tyres are the same size. Check it against the vehicle handbook or tyre-pressure label, often found inside the driver’s door frame, behind the fuel flap or in the glovebox area. Some vehicles have different approved sizes for different wheel options, and front and rear sizes may differ on certain performance models.
If the tyre is badly damaged, do not rely on a partial code or a photo taken in poor light. Give the full registration and the complete sidewall marking where possible. A professional can then verify the fitment before bringing the tyre to you.
Be careful if you have bought a used vehicle or recently changed wheels. The tyres fitted may not be the original or approved size. Incorrect rolling circumference can affect speedometer accuracy, ABS, traction control and clearance when turning or driving over bumps.
What the date code tells you
Near the DOT marking, you will find a four-digit date code on one sidewall. The first two digits show the week of manufacture and the final two show the year. For example, 1824 means the tyre was made in week 18 of 2024.
Age alone does not tell the whole story. Storage conditions, mileage, tyre pressure, sun exposure and visible cracking all matter. However, an older tyre deserves a closer inspection, particularly on a lightly used car, caravan or spare wheel. Cracks, bulges, distorted sidewalls or exposed cords are warning signs that call for replacement, not a quick inflation and hope for the best.
Matching tyres safely on the road
Where possible, fit matching tyres across an axle. They should be the same size, construction, load index and speed rating, and ideally the same make and model. Mixing very different tread patterns or levels of wear can make the vehicle less predictable in wet conditions.
If only one tyre needs replacing, the best option depends on the vehicle, the condition of the tyre opposite it and the manufacturer’s guidance. On many vehicles, the newest or deepest-tread pair is fitted to the rear axle to improve stability on wet roads. Four-wheel-drive and electric vehicles can have tighter requirements because mismatched rolling circumference may place extra strain on drivetrain components or interfere with vehicle systems.
A puncture in the central tread area may be repairable after a proper internal inspection. Damage to the shoulder or sidewall, a run-flat driven while deflated, a tyre with exposed cords, or a sizeable split is normally not safely repairable. The sidewall carries the tyre’s structural load, so even a small-looking impact mark can be serious.
Do not forget pressure and condition
The sidewall gives the tyre’s maximum capability, but it does not tell you the everyday pressure your vehicle needs. Use the pressure stated on the vehicle label or in the handbook, and check it when the tyres are cold. The correct figure may differ for normal driving and a fully loaded vehicle.
Underinflation creates excess heat, worsens fuel use and wears the tyre’s outer edges. Overinflation can reduce grip and cause more wear through the centre. Check tread depth too. The UK legal minimum is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread, around the full circumference, but replacing tyres before they reach that limit gives more wet-weather safety margin.
