A tyre that looks fine on Monday but needs air again by Thursday is not just an annoyance. It is often the first sign of a puncture, faulty valve or wheel seal problem. Knowing how to find slow tyre leaks can save you from discovering a flat tyre on the drive, outside work or halfway to the airport.
A slow leak may lose only a small amount of pressure each day, so the tyre can remain drivable at first. But running below the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended pressure causes extra heat, poorer grip, longer braking distances and unnecessary wear on the tyre’s shoulders. For vans, loaded cars and vehicles covering regular motorway miles, that risk builds quickly.
Signs You May Have a Slow Tyre Leak
The clearest sign is having to top up one tyre more often than the others. Do not judge pressure by looking alone. Modern tyres can be seriously underinflated before they visibly look flat, particularly on the rear axle.
You may also notice the tyre-pressure monitoring system warning light, steering that feels less settled, or a vehicle that seems to pull slightly to one side. A slow leak can make the car feel vague through bends or less comfortable over uneven roads. These symptoms do not always point to a tyre fault, but they are reason enough to check.
Inspect the tread and sidewall in good daylight. Look for a nail, screw, sharp stone, cut or bulge. A screw lodged in the centre of the tread is a common cause of a gradual loss of air. It may seal the hole temporarily, which is why pressure drops over hours or days rather than all at once.
If you find a screw or nail, do not pull it out. The object may be slowing the air loss. Check the pressure, avoid unnecessary driving and arrange a professional inspection. Removing it on the driveway can turn a manageable puncture into an immediate flat.
How to Find Slow Tyre Leaks at Home
Start with a reliable tyre-pressure gauge. Check all four tyres when they are cold, ideally before driving or after the vehicle has been parked for several hours. Use the pressure listed on the vehicle’s door frame, fuel flap or handbook, rather than the maximum pressure printed on the tyre sidewall.
Write down the readings and set each tyre to the correct pressure. Check again the next day and then after two or three days. If one tyre consistently loses more pressure than the others, you have confirmed a likely leak. Temperature changes can affect readings slightly, but a tyre that repeatedly drops by a noticeable amount needs attention.
Use Soapy Water to Trace Escaping Air
A simple washing-up-liquid solution can help locate a small leak. Mix water with enough washing-up liquid to make bubbles, then apply it carefully using a spray bottle, sponge or brush. Check the tread, around the valve, the valve base and the rim where the tyre meets the wheel.
Steady bubbles that grow in one spot indicate air escaping. Rotate the wheel slowly to inspect the full tread area, but do not place yourself under a vehicle supported only by a jack. If the wheel needs to come off for a proper inspection, leave that to a technician with the correct equipment.
This test is useful, but it does not find every issue. Some leaks only appear when the tyre is under load, when the wheel is in a certain position, or after the tyre has warmed up. A tyre professional can remove the wheel, inspect the inside of the casing and test the tyre and valve more thoroughly.
Check the Valve and Valve Cap
Valves are small parts, but they regularly cause slow pressure loss. The valve core can loosen or wear, the rubber valve stem can crack with age, and metal valves used with tyre-pressure monitoring sensors can corrode. Apply soapy water to the valve opening and around its base. Bubbles suggest the valve needs professional attention.
A valve cap is not the primary air seal, but it helps keep dirt and moisture out. Replace missing caps and do not rely on one to cure a leak. If air is escaping through the valve, the core, stem or sensor seal may need replacing.
Why Tyres Lose Air Slowly
A nail or screw is only one possibility. A puncture in the central tread area may be repairable if the tyre has not been driven flat and the internal structure remains sound. The final decision depends on the location and size of the damage, the tyre’s condition and a proper internal inspection.
Damage near the shoulder or in the sidewall is more serious. The sidewall flexes constantly and cannot usually be safely repaired. Cuts, cracks, bulges or impact damage from a pothole or kerb strike normally mean replacement is the safer option.
Corrosion or damage around the wheel rim can also break the airtight seal between tyre and wheel. This is particularly common on older alloy wheels, where moisture and road salt can cause corrosion at the bead seat. The tyre may look perfect from the outside, yet lose pressure around the rim.
Less often, a bent or cracked wheel can be the cause. A hard pothole impact may distort the rim enough to create a leak. If the vehicle has recently hit a pothole, clipped a kerb or had tyre work carried out, mention it when booking an inspection. It can shorten the diagnosis.
Is It Safe to Drive With a Slow Leak?
It depends on how quickly the tyre is losing air, its current pressure and the type of damage. A tyre that is holding the correct pressure and has no visible damage may allow a short, careful journey to get help. Check it before setting off, avoid high speeds, heavy loads and long distances, and stop if the pressure warning returns or handling changes.
Do not continue driving if the tyre is visibly low, below the pressure needed to support the vehicle, damaged on the sidewall or losing air rapidly. Do not attempt a motorway journey on a suspect tyre. Driving while underinflated can damage the tyre internally even if it does not look ruined outside, removing the option of a safe repair.
If you have a spare wheel, only fit it if you can do so safely and it is in usable condition. Remember that many modern cars have a temporary space-saver spare with speed and distance restrictions. A sealant kit may get you moving in limited circumstances, but it can complicate a later repair and will not fix every puncture.
