A van can look perfectly level and still be overloaded on one axle. That is where tyre trouble often starts: excess heat, fast shoulder wear, poor steering response and, in the worst cases, a sudden failure when you are carrying tools, stock or a full delivery. This van tyre load guide explains how to choose tyres that can safely carry the work your van actually does.
Start with the van, not the tyre
The tyre has to suit the vehicle’s approved weights, not just fit the wheel. Check your van’s VIN plate, usually found in the driver’s door area, under the bonnet or in the handbook. It gives the gross vehicle weight, gross train weight if you tow, and the maximum permitted load for the front and rear axles.
The gross vehicle weight is the maximum for the complete van: vehicle, fuel, driver, passengers, tools, stock and any accessories. But the axle limits matter just as much. A racking system, heavy toolboxes or pallets loaded near the rear doors can put the rear axle close to its limit while the total vehicle weight appears acceptable.
Never assume that a tyre with a higher load rating gives permission to overload the van. The vehicle’s plated limits remain the legal and safe maximum. Tyres must support the load, but they cannot make an overloaded van roadworthy.
How to read van tyre load ratings
The load index is the number in the tyre marking that tells you the maximum weight that one tyre can carry at its specified pressure. You will usually see it after the tyre size and before the speed rating.
For example, a marking such as 215/65 R16C 109/107T means the tyre is a commercial van tyre, shown by the C. The 109/107 figures are its load indices. The first figure is for single fitment, where there is one wheel on each end of an axle. The second is for dual rear-wheel fitment, where two wheels sit on each side of the rear axle.
A higher number means a greater carrying capacity. As a rough illustration, load index 99 represents 775kg per tyre, 102 represents 850kg, 109 represents 1,030kg and 112 represents 1,120kg. Those figures are per tyre, not per axle. Multiply by two for a standard axle, then compare the result with the axle limit on your VIN plate.
That calculation is a useful check, but it is not a licence to mix and match. The replacement tyre must be the correct size, construction, load index and speed rating for the vehicle. If your van was supplied with reinforced commercial tyres, replacing them with passenger-car tyres of the same physical size can be unsafe even if they look similar.
Why the letter C matters
A C-marked tyre is designed for commercial use. Its construction is intended to cope with heavier loads, regular stop-start driving and the punishment of kerbs, loading bays and rougher surfaces. Some vans use reinforced XL tyres instead, depending on the manufacturer’s specification.
It depends on the van and its approved tyre sizes. The answer is not simply to buy the stiffest or highest-rated tyre available. An unsuitable tyre can affect handling, braking, ride quality, insurance and MOT compliance. Match the tyre to the van manufacturer’s requirements first, then choose a quality option that suits your mileage and working conditions.
Tyre pressure changes the load picture
A tyre’s stated load capacity depends on it being inflated to the correct pressure. Underinflation is one of the biggest causes of van tyre damage because it allows the sidewall to flex too much. That creates heat, and heat can weaken the tyre from the inside before there is any obvious external warning.
Use the pressure label supplied with the van, not the maximum pressure printed on the tyre sidewall. Many vans have different recommendations for light and fully laden use. If you drive empty for part of the week and heavily loaded for the rest, check which setting applies before setting off with a full load.
Check pressures when tyres are cold, ideally before the first journey of the day. Include the spare if your vehicle has one. A visual check is not enough: modern van tyres can be seriously low without looking completely flat.
If one tyre repeatedly loses pressure, do not keep topping it up and hoping for the best. It may have a nail, valve fault, damaged rim or a slow leak at the bead. A prompt inspection can turn a small repair into a straightforward fix rather than a roadside blowout.
Load placement matters as much as total payload
A properly rated tyre still suffers if the load is badly placed. Keep the heaviest items low down, secure them properly and position them as close to the vehicle’s centre as practical. Avoid concentrating all heavy equipment behind the rear axle, particularly on long-wheelbase vans.
Poor load distribution can make the steering feel light, increase stopping distances and put unnecessary strain on the rear tyres. It can also make a van less stable in crosswinds, on roundabouts and during an emergency manoeuvre.
For tradespeople, the real weight is often more than expected. Racking, generators, cable reels, compressors, water tanks, ladders and replacement parts soon add up. Fleet managers should weigh a typical working van occasionally rather than relying on estimates. A van that is legal when empty may not be legal by the time the team, fuel and daily equipment are onboard.
Choose tyres for the job your van does
A courier covering motorway miles has different needs from a builder making short local runs over kerbs and uneven access roads. Both need the correct load rating, but tread pattern, durability and wet-weather performance may influence the best choice.
Do not select tyres on price alone when your van earns its keep. A cheaper tyre that wears quickly, delivers poor wet grip or is more vulnerable to damage can cost more through callouts, missed jobs and lost customer time. Equally, the most expensive tyre is not automatically the right one if the van covers low annual mileage and spends much of its life lightly loaded.
When replacing tyres, keep tyres of the same size and construction on an axle. Fit the pair with the best tread to the rear axle unless the vehicle manufacturer states otherwise. This helps rear-end stability in wet conditions. Never fit a tyre with a lower load index than the vehicle requires.
Warning signs that your van tyres are under strain
Act early if you notice uneven wear, cracks in the sidewall, bulges, vibration, frequent pressure loss or a van that pulls under braking. Wear on both outer shoulders can point to underinflation, while wear through the centre may indicate overinflation. Uneven wear on one side can also suggest wheel alignment or suspension issues.
A bulge, exposed cords, deep sidewall cut or damage caused by running flat means replacement, not repair. Continuing to drive risks a sudden failure and can damage the wheel too. For a puncture in the central tread area, a professional inspection is needed before anyone can say whether a repair is safe.
Get the right help where the van stops
If a tyre fails at a customer site, on the driveway or during a delivery run, avoid loading the van further or driving on a damaged tyre. Tell the technician the tyre size, the vehicle model and whether the van is carrying a heavy load. That helps ensure the replacement is suitable before work begins.
